I work from namely from direct observation, meaning I stand within or before my subject. It is challenging taking large canvases on site into the landscape but I work this way to experience the subject first hand. Sometimes a larger painting will take two weeks or more and sometimes I need to return to the same spot the following year to finish. Typically, I also bring the painting into the studio and continue to work on it from memory. The experience of the natural world is always woven into the work I am attempting to make. I am constantly balancing what the brush work expresses, my imagination and my perception of the subject. Sometimes while painting, language leaves me. Sometimes I feel like I disappear. Eventually a mosquito will bite me or the bitter cold is too much and I return. When the painting is complete the viewer can re-see, re-experience what I saw; and then be drawn repeatedly into a contemplation of everything within the painting and within themselves. My hope is that the paintings will resonate with people and in some way will help them deepen their appreciation for the natural world and assists them on their path toward joy.
My work has garnered awards and is held in private, corporate and public collections. My paintings have been exhibited in regional, national exhibitions including plein air events, galleries and museums. I was awarded a Hudson River Fellowship/ Grand Central Atelier in 2014 and a La Napoule artist residency in France in 2016. I have painted during our families travels to Scotland and had the privilege to do master copy works at the National Gallery Scotland, National Gallery London. My work is represented by Tory Folliard Gallery, Milwaukee, Wi and Edgewood Orchard Gallery, Door County, Wi. I earned a BA from St. Norbert College and an MFA from University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, where I was mentored by John Colt and Tom Uttech among others. I enjoyed a long teaching career and have taught at University Wisconsin Milwaukee, University Wisconsin Whitewater, Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs NY, among others and I continue to enjoy teaching workshops.
I am married to the poet Patrick J. Moran and we have three wonderful children.

Cristina Goettsch Mittermeier, "Mitty", was born in Mexico City in 1966 and grew up in nearby Cuernavaca, in the sunny state of Morelos. Hailed as one of the most influential conservation photographers of our time, she has dedicated her entire life to protecting the World's oceans - inspiring millions of people to do the same. She graduated from the ITESM University in Mexico with a degree in Biochemical Engineering in Marine Sciences. She later attended the Fine Art Photography program at the Corcoran College for the Arts in Washington, D.C. She has three adult children, John, Michael and Juliana, all of whom are passionate about nature. She lives on Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada.
In 2005 Mittermeier founded the prestigious International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP) to provide a platform for photographers working on environmental issues and coined the phrase "conservation photography".
In 2014 she co-founded SeaLegacy, a non-profit organization using strategic communications at the intersection of art, science, and conservation to protect and rewild the ocean for the benefit of biodiversity, humanity, and climate within our lifetimes.

Along with her partner, Paul Nicklen, she was named one of National Geographic's Adventurers of the Year in 2018, and in 2021, she was featured in Welcome to Earth on Disney+.
Cristina is honoured with many prestigious awards, including the Smithsonian Conservation Photographer of the Year Award, the Humanity Content Creator Award from HIPA and the Imaging Award for Photographers who Give Back. In 2021, she received the Seattle Aquarium's Sylvia Earle Medal and Travel + Leisure's Global Vision Award and was named one of the 100 Latinos Most Committed to Climate Action. Additionally, she is a World Photographic Academy member and the first female photographer to reach 1 million followers on Instagram.
Cristina is a committed impact investor and an influential voice in bridging financial returns while creating a positive social and environmental impact.

Ruth has been fascinated by portraiture since her mid-teens. Her imagination is sparked by the human face, and its unique capacity for character and communication. Ruth taught herself to paint in oils while also studying for a BA in Music, and on graduating began painting full-time.
Since then, Ruth’s paintings have gathered praise across the globe. Recent awards include a Purchase Award from the Art Renewal Center (2021) and 1st Place Young Artist award with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (2020). In 2022 Ruth was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
“My work is almost always figurative; it is humanity, facial expression, and body language which spark my imagination. I want to communicate, and I always strive for a strong narrative element in my paintings. Inspirations include the work of pre-Raphaelite and naturalist painters, and post-impressionist painters (Waterhouse, Bastien-LePage, Friant, Bramley).
I am passionate about painting from life – I’m drawn to the organic experience of capturing my immediate reality in paint. This passion is balanced by a keen curiosity regarding texture, layers, and edges. I constantly seek the most imaginative ways to make paint replicate the feel and character of what I see. Quick, immersive live studies are generally followed by extensive studio work.”
Ruth has exhibited at Sotheby’s NYC, Arcadia Contemporary NYC, MEAM Barcelona, the Mall Galleries London, and is represented by Fine Art Commissions, London.
Ruth's painting “Things Not Seen” has been selected by the Art Renewal Center for the Lunar Codex cultural time-capsule project; in 2022 a copy of the painting will be sent to the Moon.
